Cyprus monitors Middle East impact on fuel prices and tourism, spokesperson says

Nicosia, Cyprus. Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the situation in the Middle East and its impact on fuel and energy prices is being continuously monitored. He said decisions would depend on effects in Cyprus and the broader global impact and duration of the crisis.

Monitoring fuel prices and possible VAT extension

Speaking at a media briefing at the presidential palace on Tuesday, Letymbiotis said the latest information showed the price of unleaded 95 gasoline in Cyprus was currently the second lowest in the European Union, while diesel ranked fourth lowest.

On the possible extension of reduced VAT measures beyond April 1, he said evaluations were underway at the finance and energy ministries, with announcements to follow in due course.

Fiscal position and support measures

Letymbiotis said Cyprus had strong fiscal margins and a solid economic foundation, enabling the government to support citizens in difficult times.

Tourism and flight schedules

Responding to criticism about misleading communications affecting tourism, he said normality prevailed in the country and noted practical support from European partners for security and stability in Cyprus.

He said flight schedules of many airlines were initially affected, but the vast majority had now resumed, except for states at the epicenter of the crisis.

Security and stability priorities

Letymbiotis said Cyprus was a top tourist destination, with the government prioritising security for the public and promoting economic and social stability.

How do you think developments in the Middle East could affect fuel prices and tourism in Cyprus?
