Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus is monitoring developments and evaluating statements and information received, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Monday evening after a National Security Council meeting. He said the country remains focused on its humanitarian role and has not been involved in military operations.
Greek aircraft and naval assets expected
Speaking to reporters at the presidential palace, Letymbiotis said four Greek F-16 fighter jets arrived in Cyprus on Monday afternoon following a phone call between President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He thanked the Greek government for close coordination and continuous communication.
Letymbiotis said the jets arrived after the island became the target of drone strikes amid the crisis in the Middle East. He added that two Greek frigates are also expected to arrive soon.
Security council reviews and upcoming visit
Letymbiotis said the National Security Council convened again on Monday afternoon to assess the situation. He said the Greek defence minister will visit Cyprus on Tuesday to meet his counterpart Vasilis Palmas and the president, with details to be announced on Tuesday morning.
Diplomatic contacts with EU and regional leaders
The spokesman said the president and the foreign minister held diplomatic contacts throughout the day. He said the president spoke twice with the president of the European Council and the president of the European Commission, and also spoke with the Greek prime minister, the president of France, the chancellor of German, and the president of Lebanon.
