Cyprus parliament approves national centre for clinical documentation

Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed parliament’s approval of government plans to establish a national centre for clinical documentation. He said the move is intended to modernise health services and improve care quality.

Government’s objectives for the new centre

Christodoulides described the centre’s creation as “another important reform and a decisive step towards the modernisation and improvement of health services”. He said the government is implementing a health system focused on the patient, aimed at enhancing the quality and reliability of care and providing security in health.

He said the state is establishing, for the first time, an independent mechanism to ensure healthcare is provided with uniform, clear, and scientifically documented standards. According to Christodoulides, the centre will determine how proper medical care should be provided, monitor its implementation, and evaluate health services to ensure the same quality and safe care across all areas.

He added that the centre will set quality criteria and support and train health professionals to enhance transparency and promote continuous improvement of the system. He described the initiative as strategically important, aimed at strengthening public trust and upgrading the country’s health system, and said health safety is the government’s highest priority.

Powers and functions

The centre will be empowered to develop clinical protocols, guidelines, and clinical pathways. It will also provide training to healthcare workers and, when required, patients and other stakeholders.

It will monitor and evaluate the implementation of guidelines and undertake inspection programmes and accreditation systems for health services across the country.

Change to Gesy law

Parliament on Thursday night voted to amend the law on Gesy to transfer the pharmaceutical advisory commission from the health insurance organisation (HIO) to the new national centre for clinical documentation.

What changes do you expect the new centre to bring to healthcare standards in Cyprus?
