Cyprus police find no evidence of foreign intelligence link in terrorism arrests

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus police said investigations into two people arrested on suspicion of terrorism have so far found no evidence they were acting on behalf of foreign intelligence services. Police said the inquiry remains ongoing and all aspects are being examined.

No indication of foreign intelligence involvement so far

Police spokesman Vyron Vyronas said authorities do not have indications at this stage that the suspects were acting for foreign intelligence services, adding that all aspects are being investigated.

Asked whether there was reason to believe the suspects had external assistance or associates in Cyprus, Vyronas said the information available to authorities remains limited. He said there is cooperation with various competent services.

Detention order and investigation continuing

Vyronas said police may seek an extension of the five-day detention order issued on Friday, after the suspects were brought before a district court and remanded in custody. He said the individuals were presented before the district court, which issued a detention order, and that the case remains under investigation.

Suspects’ origin and reported activity

Alpha initially reported that the suspects were of Russian descent, but police said on Friday the two were identified as being of Azerbaijani origin.

Sigma had previously reported that both had allegedly been monitoring and photographing points of foreign interest in Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos.
