Cyprus police still searching for 13.6kg of missing TNT from Kalo Chorio firing range

Kalo Chorio, Cyprus. Police said they still do not know the whereabouts of 13.6kg of TNT reported missing from a firing range last week. Investigations are continuing, but no testimony has yet clarified what happened, a police spokesman said.

Police investigation

Police spokesman Christodoulos Konsolos told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) on Tuesday that investigations are ongoing but that “unfortunately, so far, no testimony has been obtained which could clarify the picture of what happened”.

He said people who have been involved in firing exercises at Kalo Chorio and individuals related to explosives are being called in for questioning, adding that “we will have to wait” for progress.

Defence ministry inquiries

Defence ministry spokesman Christos Pieris told CNA that the ministry is conducting its own interrogations and is awaiting the outcome of those interrogations and the police investigation.

Timeline and initial assessment

The TNT was reported missing on Friday. Officials said the material had been left at the site for a scheduled controlled detonation set for Thursday, which did not take place.

When personnel visited the site later in the day, they found the TNT was not there. Initial suggestions that it may have been detonated without being recorded were dismissed, and both police and the defence ministry are treating the case as a possible theft.
