Cyprus poverty risk rate stands at 14.9% in 2025, below EU average

Nicosia, Cyprus. Almost 15 per cent of Cyprus residents were at risk of poverty in 2025, according to Eurostat data published on Tuesday. The figure of 14.9 per cent was below the European Union average of 16.4 per cent.

EU figures

Eurostat said the rate corresponded to around 72 million people across the EU, with the figure rising by 0.1 percentage points since the previous survey in 2024.

Highest and lowest rates

The countries with the highest at-risk-of-poverty rates were Romania at 18.4 per cent, Malta at 16.9 per cent and France at 16.3 per cent. The lowest rates were recorded in Denmark at 11.8 per cent, Belgium at 10.9 per cent and the Czech Republic at 9.6 per cent.

Indicator definition

Eurostat said people at risk of poverty are considered to have disposable income below 60 per cent of the national median disposable income. It added that the indicator does not measure wealth or poverty, but shows how low-income earners compare with other residents.
