Larnaca, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides discussed the hostilities in the Middle East with Larnaca school students on Monday, reiterating that Cyprus wanted to be part of the solution, not the problem. He acknowledged public concern but noted the region has been at war since 1948.
Message on Cyprus’ role and regional diplomacy
Christodoulides said Cyprus “is not involved in any way in any war operation” and described it as the only country in the region speaking with everyone, with a mediating role. He said Cyprus would communicate its position to countries in the region and cited European solidarity in support of this stance.
European solidarity and security assurances
He said solidarity was demonstrated by Italy, France, Spain and Greece responding to Cyprus’ call for help “at this difficult time.” Christodoulides told the students that the top priority in Cyprus’ actions was the safety of the people of Cyprus and the whole country.
EU impact and Cyprus’ division
Christodoulides said that although the EU may be far away, it affects daily life continuously. He described joining the EU as Cyprus’ most important diplomatic achievement and said it would unavoidably affect the content of any settlement regarding the island’s ongoing division.
Education reform priorities
On the educational system, Christodoulides said the aim from day one was to revise analytical programmes to reduce the curriculum, adding that the first decision was to abolish four-month semesters. He said the educational system must equip students with critical thought.
