Cyprus R&D Funding Reaches €112 Million in 2025

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus allocated €111.99 million to research and development in 2025, according to Eurostat figures published on Friday. The amount was lower than in 2024 but nearly double the level recorded a decade earlier.

Annual and long-term trend

Government budget allocations for research and development in Cyprus fell from €150.61 million in 2024 to €111.99 million in 2025, a year-on-year decline of 25.64 per cent.

However, the 2025 allocation was 87.74 per cent higher than the €59.66 million allocated in 2015.

Funding rose from €59.79 million in 2016 and €62.47 million in 2017 to €67.08 million in 2018 and €80.44 million in 2019.

Allocations increased to €117.21 million in 2020, before easing to €110.57 million in 2021. They then rose to €115.23 million in 2022 and €138.29 million in 2023.

The €150.61 million allocated in 2024 was the highest amount recorded during the period covered by Eurostat before the decline in 2025.

European Union figures

Across the European Union, governments allocated an estimated €130.2 billion to research and development in 2025.

The figure represented 0.69 per cent of EU gross domestic product and was 2.4 per cent higher than the €127.14 billion allocated in 2024.

Compared with 2015, when EU governments allocated €81.14 billion, total research and development funding increased by 60.5 per cent.
