Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus has recorded 43 road deaths in 2025, a figure highlighted amid broader concerns over public safety risks on the island. The toll exceeds deaths from fire, drowning, and workplace accidents combined, according to the data cited.
Road deaths compared with other risks
Cyprus recorded at least 77 wildfires last year, including the Limassol blaze that destroyed entire communities and led to two deaths. The 2025 road fatality figure was presented as significantly higher than the number of deaths attributed to fire.
EU ranking and comparisons
The latest data cited places Cyprus 14th in the European Union for road deaths per million inhabitants. Romania and Bulgaria were cited at around 74–77 deaths per million inhabitants, while Sweden and Denmark were cited at 20–27 deaths per million inhabitants.
Contributing factors and policy response
Reasons cited for the road death figure include speeding, drink- and drug-driving, mobile-phone distraction, and failure to wear seatbelts or helmets. The government’s Road Safety Strategic Plan includes 158 measures, covering tougher enforcement, revised legislation, education campaigns, and improved driver testing, and fatalities were reported to have fallen by around 21 per cent between 2019 and 2024.
