Cyprus records 535 deportations since start of year, justice ministry says

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ justice ministry said deportations reached 535 since the start of the year, alongside 2,052 voluntary departures. The ministry also reported arrests and irregular arrivals recorded between January and late April.

Figures reported from January to late April

Official figures showed 578 arrests and 529 irregular arrivals were recorded between January and late April. The ministry said the data “clearly shows that the joint effort of the competent authorities is paying off, with specific and measurable results.”

Locations and grounds for deportations

The deportations included people detained in police detention centres, the central prison and the Limnes migrant centre. The cases concerned illegal residence and illegal employment.

Activity recorded from March 1 to date

For the period from March 1 to date, authorities carried out 195 deportations and recorded 729 voluntary departures, 204 arrests and 256 irregular arrivals. The figures were presented as indicating sustained enforcement activity across the island.

Ministry statement on enforcement approach

The ministry said enforcement measures are being implemented “with the same consistency”, while maintaining “respect for the rule of law and human rights”.

How do you think these figures will affect future migration enforcement in Cyprus?
