Brussels, Belgium. Cyprus reiterated its support for Ukraine at the EU foreign affairs council on Monday, hours before the fourth anniversary of Russia’s February 24 offensive. Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said Cyprus stood firmly by Ukraine and in favour of respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Support for Ukraine and sanctions
Kombos said Cyprus, as a country that has experienced an invasion and continues to live under the occupation of part of its territory, supports Ukraine. He said the council focused on continuing Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Kombos said the EU has done much over the past four years and can do more, both in the context of negotiations and in supporting Ukraine. He said Cyprus’ EU presidency would continue efforts to achieve an agreement on the “ambitious and strong” 20th sanctions package currently under discussion.
Middle East discussions: Iran and Syria
The ministers also discussed the situation in the Middle East, focusing on developments in Iran and Syria. Kombos said it was necessary to continue diplomatic efforts regarding Iran and warned of serious consequences for regional stability in the event of military escalation.
On Syria, Kombos said the situation remained fluid and called for full implementation of the ceasefire and of what has been agreed. He added that the EU should maintain its engagement in developments concerning the country.
Working lunch on Gaza
The ministers attended a working lunch with UN special coordinator for the Gaza Strip Nikolay Mladenov. Kombos said Cyprus wished to contribute to peace and stability in the region through concrete actions and implementable proposals, and “always as part of the solution”.
He said Cyprus would continue to work towards the implementation of the 20-point plan for Gaza.
What do you think the EU’s next steps should be on Ukraine and the Middle East?
