Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus recorded 33,640 beehives on farms in 2023, as the number of farm beehives across the European Union rose to 9.4 million, according to Eurostat data released for World Bee Day.
EU beehive totals and data scope
Across the EU, the number of beehives on farms reached 9.4 million in 2023, an increase of 1.3 million, or 16%, from 8.1 million in 2020. Eurostat said the data reflects only beehives located on farms, meaning the overall number of hives across the EU is likely higher.

Cyprus’ total of 33,640 beehives places it among smaller contributors, reflecting the island’s scale while remaining part of the broader agricultural ecosystem.
Countries with the highest totals
Italy recorded the highest number of beehives at nearly 1.9 million, followed by Romania with 1.7 million, Greece with 1.2 million, and Bulgaria with 1.0 million.
Increases and declines across member states
Beehive numbers increased in 12 EU countries between 2020 and 2023, with the largest rise in Italy, which added 822,490 hives, up 79%. Ten countries reported declines, with the steepest drops in Hungary, down 152,110 hives or 34%, and Spain, which recorded a decrease of 131,440 hives or 14%.
Role of bees in agriculture
Eurostat highlighted the role of bees in agriculture, noting they pollinate a wide range of crops across warm and cold climates. The office said bees can survive colder temperatures by overwintering in their hives and relying on stored honey reserves.
