Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus recorded a 0.8% month-on-month decline in retail trade volume in January 2026, according to Eurostat, as the European Union overall posted a modest increase.

Eurostat data showed Cyprus retail trade volume fell by 0.8% in January 2026 compared with December 2025. In the euro area, seasonally adjusted retail trade volume decreased by 0.1% month-on-month, while the EU recorded a monthly increase of 0.1% in January 2026.
The January figures followed a 0.2% increase in euro area retail trade volume in December 2025, while retail activity across the EU was stable during the same month. In Cyprus, the January decline followed a 0.1% rise in December 2025 and a 0.9% increase in November 2025.
Annual growth in the euro area and EU
On an annual basis, the calendar-adjusted retail sales index increased by 2.0% in the euro area in January 2026 compared with January 2025. Retail trade volume across the EU rose by 2.3% year-on-year.
Euro area sector breakdown
In the euro area, the volume of retail trade increased for food, drinks and tobacco by 0.3% in January 2026 compared with December 2025. Non-food products excluding automotive fuel declined by 0.2% over the same period, while automotive fuel sold in specialised stores fell by 1.1% month-on-month.
