Nicosia, Cyprus. The road transport department said on Wednesday that it has immobilised 664 vehicles due to potentially faulty airbags manufactured by Japanese company Takata. Owners were urged to have the airbags replaced immediately by a specialised technician.
Safety warning
The department said that if the airbag is deployed, there is a risk that its inflator may rupture, causing metal fragments to be ejected and resulting in serious injury or death. It said affected owners had been contacted by letter and SMS.
Replacement instructions
The department said the issue was a serious road safety concern and that timely compliance would help prevent serious risks and protect drivers, passengers and third parties. Where there is no representative on the island, owners will be given eight months to replace the faulty airbag and send proof to the authorities that the vehicle is safe to drive.
Further advice
The department advised owners not to use their vehicles until the defective parts have been replaced.
