Cyprus says attempted attack linked to Iran conflict was intercepted far from its maritime zone

Nicosia, Cyprus. Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said an attempted attack linked to the escalating conflict with Iran was intercepted far from Cyprus’ maritime zone. He said authorities have dealt with two security incidents since the outbreak of hostilities involving Israel, the United States and Iran.

Two security incidents

Speaking to ERTnews on Friday, Kombos said one incident involved a drone strike on RAF Akrotiri. He said a second attempted attack was neutralised before it approached Cypriot territory.

“In fact, we had a drone attack on the British base, which is very important,” Kombos said. “In addition, there was an attempted attack that was dealt with far from the Republic of Cyprus.”

Public reassurances and government stance

Kombos said normality largely prevails across the country despite the tense regional environment. He said schools and universities are open and the private and public sectors are operating normally.

He added that the number of flights arriving and departing from Cyprus is almost at the levels that existed before the initial attack on Iran. Kombos said the government has a responsibility to act cautiously as the conflict unfolds across the wider Middle East.

Coordination with partners

Kombos said Cyprus has intensified coordination with European partners and regional allies to strengthen the island’s security posture during the crisis. He highlighted support from Greece, France, Italy and Spain.

How do you think the regional conflict could affect Cyprus’ security and daily life in the coming days?
