Cyprus says desalinated water meets about 80% of national needs amid severe shortages

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ water development department said desalinated water now covers roughly 80% of the country’s total water needs, with daily production around 245,000 cubic metres. Authorities are moving to expand capacity ahead of summer as the country faces severe water shortages.

Current desalination capacity

The water development department (WDD) reported on Tuesday that five permanent desalination plants operate in Dhekelia, Larnaca, Vasiliko, Episkopi and Paphos, alongside two mobile units in Kissonerga and Moni.

Two additional mobile units at Kato Polemidia and the port of Limassol are expected to come online shortly, with the aim of enhancing summer supply capacity.

Energy use and new contracts

“The integration of renewable energy into operations is essential, given the high energy demands of desalination,” the department said in its report, adding that new contracts aim to reduce costs and boost sustainability.

Famagusta mobile unit under review

The WDD said issues surrounding a planned mobile unit in Famagusta are under review from the agriculture ministry.

Water shortages and supply outlook

Cyprus is facing severe water shortages, with dam levels at 21% and winter rainfall providing limited relief.

Authorities plan to operate 12 units by summer, with nine already active, but said supply may still fall short. They have appealed for household conservation and irrigation cuts for farmers.

Environmental concerns and local protests

Environmental concerns have emerged over rapid unit deployment, particularly in Mazotos, where EU-protected Posidonia oceanica meadows could be affected.

Residents have protested the lack of comprehensive impact studies, calling for independent assessment and verified compliance.

Official responses

WDD director Eliana Christidou said all procedures are approved and monitored. Agriculture ministry spokesperson Elena Fysentzou said desalination is necessary due to limited alternatives for drinking water.
