Paphos, Cyprus. Tourism Deputy Minister Costas Koumis said on Sunday that Cyprus “was, is, and will always be a safe destination” for tourism. Speaking during the Cyprus Marathon in Paphos, he said the event showed tourism activity in the country continues unhindered.

Koumis said the marathon “is a very important message, that tourism activity in our country continues unhindered”.
Uncertainty over the year’s tourism outlook
Asked about the potential impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on Cyprus’ tourism industry, he said it was too early to make firm estimates for the year’s course in tourism.
He said the conflict does not concern Cyprus and added, “We are only on the seventh day of a new conflict which does not concern Cyprus. Cyprus has never been part of this equation. Our role is very different, and very supportive for peace to prevail.”
Early impacts: flight cancellations and slower bookings
Koumis said there had already been some impacts in recent days, citing cancellations of flights in and out of Cyprus’ airports and a slowdown in bookings of tourist accommodation for the weeks and months ahead.
Dependence on developments in the conflict
He said Cyprus’ tourism outlook now depends on the course of events and whether the conflict escalates.
