Nicosia, Cyprus. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Thursday that the National Security Council was coordinating actions around the clock, with President Nikos Christodoulides participating in person when necessary. He said the president had thanked Greece, France, Italy and Spain for their contribution.
National Security Council coordination
Briefing reporters at the presidential palace, Letymbiotis said the council was in constant contact with all relevant services and ministries. He said he was not aware whether the National Security Council would convene again, but that coordination was continuing on a 24-hour basis.
Contacts with partners and military presence
Letymbiotis referred to meetings and contacts held by the president and government ministers, as well as the arrival of warships and fighter jets on and around the island. He also said Cyprus remained in contact with other states.
Thanks to Greece, France, Italy and Spain; UK action described as independent
Asked whether Cyprus had thanked the United Kingdom for protecting the island, Letymbiotis again referred to the support provided by Greece, France, Italy and Spain. He said Cyprus had contacted partners in the EU and thanked Greece for what he described as an immediate and substantive response, along with France, Italy and Spain.
Letymbiotis said any actions taken by the United Kingdom were carried out on its own initiative and were not the result of coordination, adding that necessary coordination would take place.
