Nicosia, Cyprus. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Tuesday that all sides would be evaluated on their positions, intentions and willingness to contribute constructively to the United Nations effort to resolve the Cyprus problem. He said the conditions for substantive progress were in place.
UN initiative and prospects
Speaking on CyBC radio, Letymbiotis said the UN secretary-general would not have launched a new initiative if there were no prospect of producing results.
Meeting with European Council president
He said President Nikos Christodoulides will meet European Council President Antonio Costa on Thursday to discuss the latest developments surrounding the initiative of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
EU role in negotiations
Letymbiotis said the European Union could not be absent from efforts to reach a settlement. He said the bloc’s role in resuming substantive negotiations could be beneficial and useful and could support UN efforts.
