Cyprus says top EU bathing water ranking reflects strong environmental protection

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ agriculture ministry said on Wednesday that the European Commission’s first-place listing for the island’s “excellent” bathing waters reflects a high level of environmental protection measures. It said all 123 monitored bathing sites in Cyprus were classified as excellent in the EU’s annual bathing water report for 2025.

Ministry statement

The ministry said the quality of bathing water is closely linked to public health and the protection of the marine environment.

It also highlighted the importance of water quality for tourism and the economy, saying the results further strengthen Cyprus’ image as a destination with clean and safe beaches.

Compliance and cooperation

The ministry said swimming is one of the most popular and important forms of recreation in Europe and added that Cyprus had fully met the obligations arising from the strict specifications of the European directive on the management of bathing water quality.

According to the ministry, the classification of the 123 sampling points as excellent was a direct result of cooperation between the department of environment, health services and public health services, the general state chemical laboratory, and local government authorities.

EU report results

The ministry’s comments followed Tuesday’s announcement that Cyprus ranked among the European Union’s top performers for bathing water quality.

The island joined Austria, Bulgaria and Greece among the countries where more than 95 per cent of bathing waters were classified as excellent quality. In Cyprus’ case, the figure reached 100 per cent.

Environmental commitment

The ministry said Cyprus continues to confirm its commitment to environmental protection and the sustainable management of natural resources, ensuring high-quality bathing waters for residents and visitors.
