Nicosia, Cyprus. Communications Commissioner Marios Pieris and Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology Demetris Skourides discussed closer cooperation on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and digital resilience.
The meeting focused on creating a strategic framework for the secure, responsible and innovative adoption of AI across society, the economy and the public sector.
AI governance and implementation
The officials examined practical cooperation measures, including the implementation of the European Union’s AI Act and the proposed development of an AI Act Implementation Playbook.
They also discussed organising joint technical meetings and roundtables with ISO/IEC experts to bring international expertise on AI governance and recognised standards into Cyprus’ preparations.
Digital resilience
The meeting considered initiatives aimed at preparing Cyprus for emerging challenges in AI and cybersecurity while strengthening the country’s broader digital resilience.
Pieris said AI and cybersecurity were interconnected pillars of Cyprus’ digital transformation and stressed the need for cooperation among competent stakeholders to build a secure, resilient and trusted digital ecosystem.
Research, innovation and industry
Skourides highlighted the importance of closer links between research, innovation, government and industry. He said such cooperation could help Cyprus develop AI’s potential, strengthen competitiveness and productivity, and support sustainable growth while remaining aligned with European values, transparency and internationally recognised governance standards.
Following the policy discussions, Pieris introduced the Office’s AI team to Skourides to support the development of joint initiatives in AI, cybersecurity and digital governance.
The two sides agreed to continue dialogue through regular structured working meetings, with the objective of advancing innovation, strengthening digital resilience and supporting the safe and trustworthy use of AI in Cyprus.
