Cyprus seeks FBI assistance in probe tied to journalist Makarios Drousiotis’ allegations

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus has requested assistance from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in investigations into allegations made by journalist Makarios Drousiotis, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday. He said the inquiry is at an advanced stage and involves ongoing evaluation of facts.

Investigation progress and international cooperation

Christodoulides, speaking after a cabinet meeting, said Justice Minister Costas Fitiris briefed him on progress, describing the investigation as “at a particularly advanced stage,” with “systematic work” under way and a “continuous evaluation of all facts.”

He said the government is already in constant contact with the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol).

Request for FBI support

Christodoulides said he contacted the US government last week to request FBI assistance, specifically for “specialised forensic checks based on modern European standards.”

He said the assistance was sought “especially in the analysis of the depositions and testimonies,” adding that the US government responded immediately and positively.

“This is an agency which, as we have seen in the past, but also from its action in general, has experience which will help to advance the rapid investigation of the case,” he said.

Government stance on rule of law

Christodoulides said the government’s tolerance for issues affecting the rule of law is “zero,” and that the administration has a responsibility, including cabinet members as “guardians of the constitution,” to pursue the matter with institutional seriousness and by working with international partners.

He said the objective is “the full investigation and strengthening of the public with regard to the institutions and justice system” in Cyprus, an EU member state.

He added that respect for the constitution, the state, and institutions is an obligation shared by all.

What do you think international assistance from agencies such as the FBI and Europol could add to this investigation?
