Cyprus Shipping Chamber welcomes European Commission maritime and ports strategies

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) welcomed the European Commission’s publication of the European Industrial Maritime Strategy and the EU Ports Strategy. The chamber said the initiatives underscore the maritime sector’s role in Europe’s energy security and supply chain protection.

Focus and objectives of the strategies

The chamber said the strategies aim to strengthen the competitiveness, sustainability and resilience of Europe’s maritime sector, with shipping, ports and shipbuilding identified as key economic pillars.

Investment priorities

In its statement, the CSC said the strategies emphasise investment in clean fuels, digitalisation and decarbonisation technologies as Europe seeks to modernise maritime activity and support the transition to more sustainable operations.

EU Ports Strategy priorities

The chamber said the EU Ports Strategy seeks to improve the sustainability and competitiveness of European ports while expanding their broader social role. It highlighted a focus on safety, security, more efficient digital operations and stronger, more integrated supply chains.

Green transition and innovation

According to the CSC, the strategies promote the green transition across the maritime value chain by linking ports, shipping companies and shipyards, and encouraging innovative technologies and sustainable practices.

Shipping’s role and regulatory alignment

The chamber said European shipping controls around 35 per cent of the global fleet, describing the sector as central to international trade. It added that the initiatives stress the importance of international regulatory harmonisation for advancing decarbonisation in global shipping.

Comments from the chamber

CSC director general Alexandros Iosifidis welcomed the emphasis on investment in clean fuels, decarbonisation technologies and innovation, saying such steps are important for the sector’s future. “These investments are vital to maintaining the competitiveness and resilience of European Shipping,” he said, adding they also support the green transition.

Cyprus perspective

The chamber said Cyprus, which it described as having one of the largest merchant fleets in the European Union and the largest ship management centre in Europe, supports initiatives intended to strengthen Europe’s leading position in global shipping while promoting sustainability across the sector.
