Cyprus Shipping Deputy Minister meets UK and IMO officials during London visit

London, United Kingdom. Cyprus Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis has concluded a three-day working visit to the United Kingdom, holding meetings with British officials and international maritime representatives. Discussions covered Cyprus’ national shipping policy and its priorities for its presidency of the Council of the EU.

Focus of the three-day visit

The visit followed Cyprus’ re-election to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and focused on reinforcing cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels while keeping Cyprus engaged with the global shipping community.

Meeting with UK counterpart

Hadjimanolis met her British counterpart, Keir Mather, and presented the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The talks also addressed strengthening Cyprus–UK relations and progress in implementing the Memorandum of Cooperation between the two countries.

Talks with IMO Secretary-General

Hadjimanolis held discussions with IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez on issues related to the organisation and challenges facing shipping globally. She told the Cyprus News Agency that attention was also given to how cooperation between Cyprus and the IMO could be strengthened over the next six months, especially in view of Cyprus assuming the presidency of the Council of the EU.

Reception for international shipping representatives

During the visit, Hadjimanolis hosted a reception at the High Commission of Cyprus in London with representatives of the international shipping industry. She said the aim was to thank IMO member countries that voted in November to re-elect Cyprus to the council, including its placement in seventh position.

What do you think Cyprus’ presidency of the Council of the EU will mean for its shipping priorities?
