Cyprus shipping sector introduced to pupils at Germasogeia primary school workshop

Germasogeia, Cyprus. Sixth-grade pupils at the 2nd Primary School of Germasogeia took part in an interactive workshop introducing them to Cyprus’ shipping sector. Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanolis attended the event and spoke to students about the industry’s role in daily life.


Workshop on shipping and daily life

The workshop, titled ‘Getting to know the world of shipping’, aimed to show pupils how shipping affects everyday life and to provide an initial overview of professions linked to the maritime sector.

Deputy minister highlights shipping’s role and Cyprus’ position

Hadjimanolis told pupils that “90 per cent of the products we have in our homes arrived by ship”. She also described Cyprus as an international maritime centre, saying that although the island is small, “it is a pioneer in shipping and is one of the largest shipping countries in the world”.

Employment prospects and student participation

Hadjimanolis highlighted the employment prospects offered by the sector, describing shipping as a key pillar of the Cypriot economy with opportunities for young people across a range of fields. Pupils asked questions about shipping, seafarers and maritime professions, and took part in interactive activities at the school.

Aim of the initiative

The initiative sought to familiarise children with the shipping sector from an early age and to help them understand its importance for Cyprus and its role in connecting countries, economies and everyday life.
