Cyprus steps up foot-and-mouth disease measures and prepares for informal EU Council meeting

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ efforts to contain foot-and-mouth disease are continuing in coordination with the European Commission and the north, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Tuesday.

Coordination on protocols and compliance

Letymbiotis said implementing the relevant protocols is the fastest way out of the crisis, including for Turkish Cypriots.

Asked about reports of non-compliance with protocols in the north, he said Turkish Cypriots receive funding and support that also comes with obligations, and noted that the EU has proposed a joint response since the first case was identified.

He said the government hoped for a response focused on protecting the primary sector and ensuring alignment with protocols drawn up for scientific and veterinary reasons rather than political ones.

Informal EU Council meeting and security planning

Responding to questions about threats to block foreign leaders from attending the informal EU Council meeting in Cyprus on Thursday and Friday, Letymbiotis said the right to protest is inalienable.

He described the meeting as one of the highlight moments of Cyprus’ EU Council presidency, with leaders of EU member states and the region visiting the island at what he called a critical juncture. He said he hoped for collective responsibility so the informal Council reflects the success of the presidency.

Letymbiotis said competent authorities have been consulted to ensure the meeting proceeds smoothly on both days.

How do you think authorities should balance the right to protest with ensuring visiting leaders can attend the meeting?
