Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said an informal meeting of EU and regional leaders in Cyprus could mark the start of a more consistent, results-oriented dialogue between the EU and its partners. He said the shared objective of the dialogue is a stronger European Union alongside a stronger, more stable region.
Christodoulides highlights Cyprus role as bridge
In a post on X, Christodoulides said Cyprus, “at the crossroads of three continents”, will continue to act as a bridge between the European Union and the wider region. He said Cyprus would remain consistent with its role as an enabler of security and stability, adding that crises and challenges can create opportunities.
Leaders call for stronger defence and energy measures
On Friday, leaders called for stronger European defence cooperation, faster energy independence and closer engagement with the Middle East, as instability in the region continues to affect Europe’s security and economy.
Costa cites symbolism of Cyprus hosting
European Council President Antonio Costa said Cyprus hosting the summit carried “important symbolism”, demonstrating the EU’s support for member states most affected by conflicts in the Middle East. He said Cyprus is “a vital anchor of cooperation and European engagement in the region”.
