Nicosia, Cyprus. More than one million kilograms of batteries have been recycled in Cyprus since 2009, according to figures released by the Cyprus waste management association on Monday. The organisation said total collections have reached 1,021,719 kilograms.
Milestone in battery recycling
The association said the total marks a milestone in efforts to divert hazardous waste from landfills. It described the achievement as a significant environmental gain, saying that “the first million kilograms is an environmental victory, but we are not complacent. We continue together for the next million.”
2025 collections and contributing factors
In 2025 alone, 91,111 kilograms of batteries were collected nationwide, the association said. It attributed the increase to sustained public participation and an expanded collection network.
Collection network and recycling bins
The association operates 6,135 battery collection bins placed in supermarkets, shops, schools, public buildings and banks.
Association statement
“These figures confirm the consistency of Cypriot consumers in recycling, despite the challenges,” the association said, adding that the results strengthen its strategy to reduce toxic waste entering landfills.
