Nicosia, Cyprus. A 32-year-old foreign national accused of attempted murder who escaped custody and left Cyprus for Romania in February has been arrested in Romania. Cypriot authorities said extradition procedures have been launched.
Arrest and extradition process
Police said Romanian authorities arrested the suspect last week and informed Cypriot authorities. Procedures for his extradition are under way.
Internal investigation
An internal investigation into failures by state services remains ongoing, authorities said.
Case background and missed court appearance
The suspect was due to appear before a criminal court on February 3 in connection with the stabbing of his employer in the neck on November 24, 2025, in Larnaca. He was instead transferred to Athalassa hospital under a psychiatric hospitalisation order and did not attend the hearing, prompting the Law Office to issue an arrest warrant that was not executed because he had travelled to Romania.
