Cyprus taxi drivers announce one-day stoppage over passenger transport applications

Nicosia, Cyprus. Taxi drivers will stage a one-day work stoppage starting at 6am on Tuesday to protest what the taxi union Poat described as “uncontrolled action by passenger transport applications.” The union said it could move to an indefinite strike from Tuesday, January 27.

Union announcement and escalation plans

Poat said the stoppage follows a four-hour work stoppage held on January 13 and cited a lack of action and meetings by the relevant bodies after that protest. The union said it would continue mobilisations as previously announced and demanded that taxi drivers be taken into account.

Gathering points and planned actions

Taxi drivers are set to gather at dedicated meeting points at Larnaca and Paphos airports and at the Potamos Germasogeia parking lot in Limassol. Drivers from Larnaca will gather at the airport’s parking lot between 7am and 8am, after which they are expected to block one of the lanes on the road.

Demands on ride-hailing apps and regulations

Drivers are calling for ride-hailing apps from outside Larnaca to stop operating at Larnaca airport and for strict implementation of all taxi regulations. Earlier in January, drivers said meetings with the transport ministry had not produced results, prompting what they described as a question of professional survival and leading them to call for strike action.
