Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus will distribute one million flow reducers for showers and two million aerators for taps to reduce water consumption, Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou said on Monday. The distribution will be funded by energy company EKO.
Water-saving device distribution
Panayiotou said that if everyone reduces water consumption by 10 per cent, the overall result for Cyprus would be significant. She noted that average water consumption in Cyprus is about 140 litres per person per day, higher than the European Union average of around 125 litres.
She said the equipment can substantially reduce water consumption without affecting citizens’ quality of life.
Desalination and water security
Panayiotou stressed the importance of desalination in tackling water scarcity and said these steps remain necessary despite a surge in overall water supplies in 2026. She said that water security in Cyprus depends on the ability to produce water in a stable and reliable manner.
She referred to three additional desalination units put into place in Moni, Kissonerga and the Limassol port within the last two years, and said a fourth would be operational in May. She added that additional mobile units are scheduled for deployment in 2026 or 2027, while existing units will be expanded in the meantime.
Panayiotou said four new desalination units are simultaneously underway in eastern Limassol, Ayia Napa-Ayia Thekla, Polis Chrysochous and Dhekelia.
Infrastructure upgrades
To address water losses due to ageing infrastructure and increased maintenance needs, Panayiotou said projects totalling €10.5 million were approved for local district governments in 2025. She added that an additional €1 million was allocated for communities to replace outdated pipelines, reduce leaks and improve water supply network operation.
