Mumbai, India. A Bollywood film will be shot in Cyprus for the first time in the coming months, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday as the first day of his state visit to India ended.
Collaboration announced in Mumbai
Christodoulides made the announcement at a reception at Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace hotel, saying there is a collaboration between Anjali Bhushan Mago, described as a producer, writer and director, and Cypriot producer, director and Ray Films co-founder Athena Xenidou. He said the pair are set to work together on the film and will travel to Cyprus during the summer.
Wider Cyprus-India ties and film incentives
Christodoulides described the project as an example of how the two countries can share creativity, talent and ambition, and thanked the production and creative team for choosing Cyprus as the film’s setting. He said relations between Cyprus and India are going “from strength to strength” and that cooperation between industries, including the film industry, is growing.
He said Cyprus is committed to supporting international productions through a competitive and reliable framework of incentives designed to help creative projects thrive, stressing that culture is not separate from the economy. He added that creative industries create jobs, attract investment, strengthen tourism and inspire new business opportunities, and that they invite people to discover, visit and connect.
Partnership focused on people and culture
Christodoulides said the evening reflected a growing cultural and creative partnership between Cyprus and India that is built not only on economic cooperation and connectivity, but also on people, talent and culture. He described such cooperation as the kind of international partnership Cyprus wants to encourage, characterising it as outward-looking, practical and built on cooperation.
