Cyprus to receive EU financial support for measures against foot-and-mouth disease outbreak

Brussels, Belgium. Cyprus is set to receive financial support from the European Union to proceed with measures to combat the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday.

EU support and planned measures

Christodoulides said he thanked the President of the European Commission for financial support aimed at addressing immediate challenges and helping to reactivate the livestock sector, following his attendance at the European Council meeting.

He said measures were discussed to further protect Cyprus against other possible diseases of this type in the future. Christodoulides also said the Council’s role toward third parties was important so that they take steps to avoid creating problems in Cyprus.

The president did not specify how much funding would be provided by the EU or when it would be made available.

Meetings on Middle East, FMD, and Cyprus problem

Christodoulides later met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the Middle East crisis, the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak on the island, and the way forward in the Cyprus problem.

Culling totals reported

As of Tuesday, 1,160 cows and 15,000 sheep and goats had been slaughtered as part of culling measures to prevent the further spread of foot-and-mouth disease on the island, bringing the total to more than 16,000.

What do you think EU financial support should prioritize to help Cyprus address the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak?
