Cyprus transport department warns about hidden electronic car door handles after safety incidents abroad

Nicosia, Cyprus. The road transport department (TOM) on Monday warned about hidden electronic car door handles following safety incidents abroad in which vehicle doors failed to open during emergencies.

Incidents reported by international safety organisations

TOM said international road safety organisations have recorded cases in which electronically controlled door handles malfunctioned after traffic accidents or during fires, making it difficult or impossible for passengers to exit the vehicle. In some incidents, a drop in battery voltage caused the exterior handles to remain inactive in their closed or hidden position.

Concerns over existing safety standards

TOM said European organisations have indicated that current safety standards do not adequately guarantee that electronically controlled doors can be opened after an accident or in the event of a power failure.

Guidance for vehicle owners in Cyprus

TOM urged vehicle owners in Cyprus to consult their manuals for instructions on using the manual door release mechanism and opening doors without electrical power. Owners were told to identify the manual releases for the front and rear doors and inform all users about their operation.

Battery checks and malfunction advice

TOM said regular battery checks are essential because electronic handles rely on sufficient power. Owners should avoid using the vehicle if a door handle malfunctions until it is inspected and repaired.

Contact for information and incident reports

For more information or to report incidents, TOM said people can contact [email protected].
