Cyprus urges importers and consumers to report Chinese-origin replacement airbags after US warning

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ road transport department (TOM) on Tuesday called on importers and sellers to inform the department if they may have distributed specific Chinese-origin replacement airbags on the island. The call followed an urgent warning issued by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

US incidents and manufacturer details

According to the transport ministry, 10 accidents have been recorded in the United States in which replacement airbags ruptured violently, causing death or serious injury. The airbags were manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co (DTN).

Guidance for consumers and current status in Cyprus

TOM also called on consumers who have had their airbags replaced with the specific Chinese airbags to inform their mechanic, auto technician or seller. The department said there has so far been no indication that the airbags have been installed in cars in Cyprus.

Contact information

Consumers can contact the department by calling 22600500 or emailing [email protected].

Have you had your vehicle’s airbags replaced and checked whether the replacement matches the Chinese airbags cited by TOM?
