Cyprus welcomes US announcement on phase two of Gaza Peace Plan

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus welcomed a US announcement on phase two of the Gaza Peace Plan, calling it a vital step toward stabilisation efforts. The foreign ministry said it would continue working with international and regional partners toward sustainable peace and security.

Cyprus statement on phase two

In a post on X, the foreign ministry said Cyprus welcomed the US announcement on phase two of the Gaza Peace Plan, including the establishment of the Palestinian technocratic committee. It said the move was a vital step in enabling the transition to stabilisation efforts according to UNSC Resolution 2803. The ministry added that Cyprus would continue actively complementing efforts, in cooperation with international and regional partners, toward sustainable peace and security.

White House announcement and board members

The White House announced on Friday some members of a so-called “Board of Peace” to supervise the temporary governance of Gaza, which has been under a fragile ceasefire since October. The names include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Trump is the chair of the board, according to a plan his White House unveiled in October.

Plan oversight and transitional governance

Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas signed off on Trump’s plan, which says a Palestinian technocratic body will be overseen by the international board. The board will supervise Gaza’s governance for a transitional period.

What do you think Cyprus’s role could be in supporting international efforts toward stabilisation in Gaza?
