Cyta clarifies stance on proposed legal amendments and planned entry into energy market

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyta’s board and management issued a statement on Friday outlining the organisation’s position on proposed amendments to the law governing its operation and its planned entry into the energy market.

Statement issued amid public discussion

Cyta said the statement followed public discussion on modernising the legislation that defines the organisation’s mandate. It framed its position as seeking an “equal regulatory framework with benefits for society and the country.”

Technology and energy convergence

Cyta said the convergence of technology, energy and related services is already a European reality and that it operates in a rapidly changing environment. It added that it monitors international trends and examines how its expertise and infrastructure can be used for the benefit of consumers and the country, within its institutional framework.

Call for modernised legislation

Cyta said the legislation governing its operation has not been modernised for decades, unlike other public law organisations that it said have broader and more flexible institutional frameworks.

Reference to Electricity Authority of Cyprus

Cyta cited the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) as an example, noting that EAC already grants third parties access to its telecommunications infrastructure and also operates a desalination unit. “Under this prism, Cyta is asking for the obvious,” the statement said.

Seeking equal terms in a competitive market

Cyta said it is seeking the same institutional capacity and flexibility within its legislative framework to operate on equal terms in an open and competitive market. It also said private telecommunications providers already have the ability to operate in any sector they consider operationally critical.

What do you think the proposed legal amendments should prioritise as Cyta considers entering the energy market?
