Demetriou calls for unity and responsibility at March 25 student parade in Nicosia

Nicosia, Cyprus. House president and Disy leader Annita Demetriou on Wednesday called for unity and a sense of responsibility to secure the country’s future, speaking after a student parade outside the Greek embassy.

March 25 anniversary events

Demetriou said the day was a “double celebration” for Hellenism, marking both the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and “the decision of the nation to throw off Ottoman rule”.

Call for security and stability

Citing what she described as “uncertainty and instability”, Demetriou said the country’s security and stability must be safeguarded “not with slogans, but with responsibility, seriousness and conscious choices”.

Message of unity and ties with Greece

Demetriou said Cyprus can move forward “always together with Greece”, adding that recent events have shown that “Greece is not far away”. She said being Greek entails responsibility and a daily way of life, and that “if we are truly united, we can achieve that which seems impossible”. She said this was “the message of the day”.

Thanks to students

Demetriou thanked students for participating in the parade.

What do you think Demetriou’s call for unity means for the country’s future?
