Demetriou urges cooperation in new Cyprus parliament ahead of election

Nicosia, Cyprus. Outgoing House president and Disy leader Annita Demetriou called for cooperation and responsibility in the next parliament to ensure it functions for citizens, the economy and the state. She spoke to the Cyprus News Agency on Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s election.

Call for cooperation and concerns over obstruction

Demetriou said it was not yet clear what the stance of several parties would be on critical issues, adding that it was uncertain whether there would be willingness to reach consensus or whether constant rejection and obstruction would prevail.

She described a climate of toxicity, division and populism, characterised by a tendency to “tear everything down” without offering alternatives or taking responsibility. Demetriou said this was dangerous for the functioning of democracy and the economy, warning that if the House cannot function the country risks paralysis at a cost to the economy, the state and citizens.

Election context and party landscape

Her comments came as this year’s election is set to have the most parties ever taking part, with 19 in total. Some smaller parties are expected to win seats, while some established parties risk falling out of Parliament.

Polls, priorities and parliamentary margins

Asked about opinion polls showing Disy leading with a small margin over Akel, Demetriou said victory for her party was not a matter of ego but of setting the country’s political direction. She said Disy wanted the most seats in Parliament to tip the scales in favour of stability, realism and responsible decisions.

Demetriou said even minor differences could have a significant impact on parliamentary decision-making, noting that a single vote has often determined critical decisions on the economy, reforms or social policy.

Public dialogue and campaign approach

She called for a conscientious strategy and said public dialogue has recently been overshadowed by rifts and unfounded assertions. Demetriou added that Disy would not alter its character to win short-term acclaim.
