Demolition works halted in Nicosia after asbestos discovery

Nicosia, Cyprus. Authorities on Monday halted demolition-related works at a building in Ayios Andreas after asbestos sheets were discovered at the site. The contractor was ordered to prepare a plan for the safe removal of the material.

Safety concerns

The Nicosia district government organisation (EOA) and the labour inspection department ordered debris removal to stop following residents’ complaints on Saturday that required asbestos-handling safety measures had not been observed.

EOA officers inspected the site and found that the demolition permit’s conditions were not being followed. These included requirements to notify neighbours in writing and to manage waste, particularly asbestos, appropriately.

Further instructions

The labour inspection department contacted the contractor, who followed the authorities’ initial instructions.

During a further inspection on Monday, asbestos sheets were found at the site. The contractor was instructed to immediately cease works and draw up a plan for their safe removal to protect public health.

The department also instructed that debris be doused with water and that measurements be taken to detect asbestos in the atmosphere.

Possible fine

The Nicosia EOA said it remained in constant coordination with the labour inspection department to protect public health and safety and ensure strict compliance with the law.

It added that the legislation also provides for an administrative fine.
