Nicosia, Cyprus. Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Clea Papaellina said on Friday that the quality of relationships within the family will determine the future of society, in a message marking International Family Day.
Family described as society’s basic unit
Papaellina described the family as the “basic unit of society” and said the occasion was an opportunity to reflect on the role families play in modern life. She said that beyond traditional definitions and biological ties, a family can be any stable and supportive bond of love where children feel safe, accepted and cared for.
Impact of family relationships on social values
Papaellina said family relationships shape wider social values and behaviour, adding that the family is a mirror of values, behaviours and society as a whole.
Pressures facing families
She acknowledged that many families are facing growing pressures, including demanding work schedules, financial difficulties and lack of time. She said that in such an environment, the need for meaningful connection and quality communication becomes more imperative than ever.
Government support and expectations for parenting
Papaellina said the government is enforcing policies to strengthen families and support parents through social care, education and targeted programmes. She said the state must stand by parents and that parenting is demanding and does not come with a manual. She added that parents require support, guidance and practical tools to raise children in a healthy environment, and said the goal is not perfection but parents who listen, understand and support their children consistently and empathetically.
What steps do you think are most important for improving communication and connection within families?
