Limassol, Cyprus. DP World Limassol CEO Charles Pitout said the cruise industry could become a key driver of growth for the Cypriot economy if it operates sustainably and in a way that supports the city and local economy.

Pitout said the sector should avoid models that create congestion without generating revenue, adding that cruise operations should have a real connection with the local economy.
Cooperation with Marella Cruises
Speaking to Entrepreneurial Limassol, a periodical published by the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Evel), Pitout cited cooperation with Marella Cruises, where Limassol operated as a homeport. He said passengers responded positively and highlighted a service in which luggage was transported directly from the airport to the ship.
Plans for Limassol’s cruise profile
Pitout said he wants Limassol to be on the Mediterranean map like Mykonos and Santorini within five years. He also said Cyprus underestimates the wealth it possesses, citing the mountains, Kourion, Petra tou Romiou and beaches as an untapped resource.
Upcoming events and investments
Pitout said DP World will host the MEDCruise General Assembly in Limassol in 2027 and that the terminal will also serve as a venue for major events of the Cypriot EU Presidency. He said the company has made investments and upgrades at the cruise terminal and described hosting such events as part of its responsibility as a strategic partner of the government.
Public-private cooperation and recent crises
Pitout said the port belongs to the state and that cooperation between the public and private sectors is crucial. He said such cooperation was important in managing successive crises, including the pandemic and the war in Gaza, as well as the creation of a humanitarian corridor, adding that the next five years will be decisive for what can be achieved.
