Moni, Cyprus. Police have arrested a 37-year-old driver after 70-year-old Savvas Ioannou was run over on Thursday night on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway near Moni.
Arrest and investigation
Head of Limassol’s traffic police Marios Charalambous told state radio on Friday that police arrested the driver and placed him in custody. Charalambous said the driver maintained he did not see the roadwork signs.
Test results
The driver tested negative for alcohol and narcotics.
Roadworks and sequence of events
Ioannou was part of a crew painting road lines on the motorway and was unloading traffic cones when he was killed, with some colleagues working next to him. The accident happened at 7.25pm on Thursday.
A saloon car drove over traffic cones, collided with a lit arrow sign installed on a light truck, and then hit Ioannou.
Driver injury
The driver was slightly injured and was taken to a private clinic where he underwent tests.
What steps do you think should be taken to improve safety for roadwork crews on motorways?
