Paphos, Cyprus. A 37-year-old driver was arrested after a 24-year-old roadworks worker was seriously injured when struck by a car on the Paphos-Limassol highway on Thursday morning.
Driver’s account
Police said the driver told officers he had been distracted at the time of the crash, claiming he leaned over to retrieve a bottle of water that had fallen inside the car.
Efforts to avert collision
Police said another worker saw the car veer off course and tried to pull the 24-year-old back.
Scene and injuries
The car stopped on the flashing arrow that had been set up for the roadworks. The injured worker was taken to hospital by ambulance and was found to have suffered multiple injuries, with his condition described as extremely critical.
Arrest
Police said the driver tested positive for narcotics and was arrested.
