Nicosia, Cyprus. A drone carrying a suspicious package bound for the central prisons was intercepted on Thursday after being detected by the prison’s anti-drone system. Prison officers seized the device and its cargo before they could reach the prison complex.
Interception and seizure
In a statement, the justice ministry said the anti-drone system identified the drone as it approached the prison complex carrying a package. Prison officers immediately impounded both the device and its cargo.
Police investigation
Police were subsequently informed and took possession of the evidence as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident. Authorities have not disclosed the contents of the package, and no arrests have been announced.
Ministry statement
The ministry described the case as “a new attempt to illegally import objects into the central prisons via drone” and confirmed that both the drone and package were confiscated by authorities.
Security system role
The ministry said the incident demonstrated “the effectiveness of the anti-drone system” currently operating at the prison, describing it as “an important tool for strengthening the security” of the facility. It added that the system is designed to prevent the illegal importation of mobile phones, drugs and other prohibited items into the prison.
Ongoing examination
Police investigations are continuing after officers received the seized drone and package for further examination.
