EAC employees to stage three-hour work stoppage over unresolved energy sector issues

Nicosia, Cyprus. Employees of the Electricity authority of Cyprus (EAC) are staging a three-hour work stoppage on Wednesday, from 8am to 11am, to protest what they described as serious unresolved problems and government proposals they called imaginative and unfounded.

Union warning and letter to the EAC board

In a statement last week, their trade unions warned that if solutions were not found, they would escalate their measures.

In a letter to the EAC board of directors, the unions said the situation in the energy sector was worsening due to the absence of strategic planning, adding that the repercussions were burdening consumers and the wider economy.

Delays, inaction and criticism of state actions

The unions cited delays and inaction as contributing factors to what they described as a painful situation.

They said the problems remained unsolved and that they were seeing actions on behalf of the state that, in their view, exacerbated the situation.

Concerns over electricity costs and sector priorities

The trade unions said that, instead of dealing with tasks in the energy sector to secure electricity adequacy, supply security, consumer support and photovoltaics for everyone, the state was focusing on proposals they described as imaginative and unfounded, which they said were turning into a fiasco and increasing, rather than decreasing, the cost of electricity.

Previous stoppage and Cyta market entry plans

On February 27, EAC workers staged a two-hour work stoppage to protest what they described as erratic government policies in the energy sector and plans to allow the Cyprus telecommunications authority (Cyta) to enter the energy market.

How do you think the energy sector should be managed to ensure electricity adequacy and stable costs for consumers?
