EAC proposes two cable routes to electrify Acheritou area within Dhekelia British base territory

Acheritou, Cyprus. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has proposed two alternative routes for installing power cables to supply electricity to an area in Acheritou, House energy committee chairman Kyriakos Hadjiyiannis said on Monday. The proposals aim to resolve a long-standing issue involving electrification plans previously rejected by the Dhekelia British Sovereign Base Area authorities.

Electrification plans and objections

Hadjiyiannis said Acheritou is a large area neighbouring Engomi (Famagusta) and is located within British base territory. He said that, until now, the Bases had refused to allow electrification of the area for agricultural purposes and for the needs of certain churches, citing concerns about potential impact on electronic surveillance antenna installations.

Committee visit and discussions

During a visit by the House energy committee to the community, discussions were held with EAC representatives in the presence of the Bases’ civil administrator and the Acheritou community leader. The talks focused on alternative scenarios intended to avoid the area where the British antenna installations are located.

Next steps

Hadjiyiannis said two alternative routing options were presented that leave no grounds for objections related to interference with surveillance systems. He described the visit as useful and said the authority is expected to finalise the two routes and submit them to the British Bases for a response as soon as possible.

What do you think should be the next step if the British Bases raise further objections to the proposed routes?
