Nicosia, Cyprus. Edek leader Nikos Anastasiou said on Tuesday that the possibility of the party withdrawing from the government remains under consideration. He said a final decision is expected at the party’s congress before the end of the year, unless developments force an earlier move.
Government participation under review
Speaking on Omega TV, Anastasiou said Edek’s participation in government would be assessed in light of what he described as insufficient political and organisational support after the parliamentary elections. He said the question of leaving the government would be settled at the congress unless something happened that required an earlier decision.
Election result and internal weaknesses
Anastasiou also referred to Edek’s failure to win parliamentary representation for the first time in the party’s electoral history. He attributed the result to internal weaknesses and divisions, saying organisational shortcomings and internal sabotage by older executives had contributed to a loss of voter support.
He added that internal rhetoric had in some cases been toxic.
Party reassessment and leadership question
The Edek president said the party is entering a period of reassessment and restructuring, with discussions continuing ahead of its internal congress. He confirmed that his own position as party leader will also be submitted to the central committee, which is scheduled to meet next Sunday.
Anastasiou said his resignation would be available for consideration by the party’s internal bodies, without saying whether he intends to step down immediately or remain in place during the transition period.
Possible future alliances
He also outlined possible directions for future political cooperation, saying Edek could seek closer alignment with the Ecologists and Dipa. He ruled out cooperation with Diko, saying its behaviour and that of its president in the run-up to the elections left no room for cooperation.
