Education unions seek meeting with Christodoulides on indefinite-contract teachers

Nicosia, Cyprus. The education unions Poed, Oelmek and Oltek have requested a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides to discuss the status of teachers on indefinite contracts. The request comes ahead of a joint union meeting scheduled for next Monday.

Request follows parliamentary amendment

The unions’ request was submitted after parliament passed an amendment prohibiting the termination of employment for permanent teachers in cases of redundancy.

Unions seek consultation before planned meeting

The organisations asked that the meeting with the president take place before their joint gathering, where they plan to assess developments and decide on their next steps.

Unions cite long-standing imbalance

In a communique, the unions said the amendment addresses a structural imbalance affecting teachers for years. They said the change “corrected a distortion and injustice that had been occurring for many years, to the detriment of permanent teachers”, particularly compared with provisions applied across the wider public sector.

What do you think the unions should prioritise in a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides?
