Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The death toll from landslides in southern Ethiopia’s Gamo Zone has risen to 125, the South Ethiopia regional government said. Heavy rains triggered a series of landslides across the area, with more people still missing.
Death toll and cause
The regional government said heavy rains led to multiple landslides in different parts of the Gamo Zone. Authorities had confirmed 70 deaths as of last Thursday, and the South Ethiopia regional government updated the toll to 125 on Sunday.
Displacement
More than 11,000 people have been displaced, according to a statement by the regional government’s communications office posted on its Facebook account.
Prime minister’s visit
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited the landslide-affected area on Saturday to offer condolences to local residents and pledged government support, according to a post on his X account.
